Remove ‘Post Title’ from Pages on WordPress w/Genesis Theme Framework

December 30, 2010

Genesis Framework for WordPressThere are so many ways to customise the themes that you use with WordPress.  I have chosen to mainly use the Genesis Theme Framework by Studio Press because the developers have added good SEO features and provide great support.  I’ve been able to do a lot of customisation to sites by using the various child themes and editing the CSS.  They’ve also added some plugins to make it easier for me and clients to update commonly edited areas of the site (like removing author name from posts, etc.)  Sometimes I edit the functions.php file of the child theme in order to add widgets, add/remove/edit other areas on pages.  Sometimes I get the code to do this from the Studio Press support forum when specific to the theme, other times from the WordPress.org Support Forum (support only for those that have purchased themes) and also by just ‘Googling’ what I am looking for and finding it on a helpful blog on the topic.  Some of these customisations are so good I want to use them on all sites and pretty much remember how to do them off the top of my head. Some are only applicable to certain situations and are only needed once in awhile, so then I need to go digging back into old work to see what I had done — or I need to start from scratch looking through forums again.  I’ve decided that I will now document this customisations in this blog so that I can easily find them again, and perhaps help others looking for similar solutions.

Remove ‘Post Title’ from All Pages & Posts

In functions.php add the following:

//REMOVE POST TITLE FROM ALL PAGES AND POSTS
add_action(‘genesis_before’, ‘child_conditional_actions’);
function child_conditional_actions() {
if ( is_page() )
remove_action(‘genesis_post_title’, ‘genesis_do_post_title’);
}

Remove ‘Post Title’ from Homepage Only

In functions.php add the following:

//REMOVE POST TITLE FROM HOMEPAGE ONLY
add_action(‘genesis_before’, ‘child_conditional_actions’);
function child_conditional_actions() {
if ( is_home() )
remove_action(‘genesis_post_title’, ‘genesis_do_post_title’);
}

Remove ‘Post Title’ from ‘Front Page’

To be used when you have indicated a specific page to be used for the front page of the site under Settings-General.

In functions.php add the following:

//REMOVE POST TITLE FROM FRONT PAGE
add_action(‘get_header’, ‘child_remove_page_titles’);
function child_remove_page_titles() {
if ( is_front_page() )
remove_action(‘genesis_post_title’, ‘genesis_do_post_title’);
}

Remove ‘Post Title’ from a Specific Page (other than the Homepage or Front Page)

In functions.php add the following:

//REMOVE PAGE TITLE FROM ABOUT US PAGE
add_action(‘genesis_before’, ‘child_conditional_actions’);
function child_conditional_actions() {
if(is_page(‘about-us’ ))
remove_action(‘genesis_post_title’, ‘genesis_do_post_title’);
}

To indicate which specific page to apply the condition to you can use the page title, the page slug or the ID number. (Thanks to http://www.techforluddites.com/2010/01/thesis-applying-functions-only-to-specific-pages.html for providing this information.  Check out that post and http://www.inforats.com/set-a-wordpress-widget-to-appear-on-some-pages/ for more information on conditional statements for a variety of functions.)

Remove ‘Post Title’ from More than One Page

In functions.php add the following using a double bar to separate the different pages:

//REMOVE PAGE TITLE FROM INDICATED PAGES
add_action(‘genesis_before’, ‘child_conditional_actions’);
function child_conditional_actions() {
if(is_front_page() || is_page(‘about-us’ ) || is_page (‘contact-us’ ))
remove_action(‘genesis_post_title’, ‘genesis_do_post_title’);
}

Thanks to @Nick_theGeek for the original code snippet from the Studio Press forum. I then picked up how to make it work for my specific need (Front Page) from a few other posts with similar situations.

This specific code may not work with your theme, but if you look at the code you may be able to see how you can apply it to suit you.

Let me know if you have any other tips on this or any other useful WordPress or Genesis Theme Framework customisation ideas.

Trident Holiday Homes Ireland

We found Ann to be very approachable and friendly, she even took time out of her vacation in Ireland to visit our office. Ann was available at the end of a phone to answer any queries we had. All in all, I would recommend Ann to anyone who is looking for a digital marketing consultant and coach, she will help you maximize your results and help you increase your ranking organically.

It was like a light was turned on for me

The Smart Happy Project

When I joined Sarah Leather and Ann Donnelly’s course, “How to Make Money Online and Become an Entrepreneurial Goddess”, I had a seed of an idea that at some point I thought I might need a website and this course could help with that. I was right about that, but what the course showed me was so much more. It was like a light was turned on for me. Being shown the simple online tools that can assist in researching, setting up, monetising and promoting your site has been invaluable (and all without the boring tech jargon that just numbs any creativity one might have had). I have gone from seed of an idea to completed website in 5 months, and yes I am proud of that! Anyone with an entrepreneurial side and wanting to do something new needs to do this course, without a doubt.

Without a doubt the best course I’ve ever done

“How to Make Money Online and Become an Entrepreneurial Goddess” is without doubt the best course I’ve ever done. The sessions had so much content and were made really interesting by Sarah Leather and Ann Donnelly’s well thought out presentation. I was aware how marketing on the internet was so powerful but had no idea how to draw people to my website. Now with all I’ve learnt I’m so amazed by how much my profile has lifted. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to make more money online.

A great speaker and a knowledgeable advisor

Greg Mulcahy

While filming Ann’s talk at a Business of Social Media Conference, I was distracted by her highly creative manner of explaining social media and internet marketing for business. Her knowledge on the subject is vast, and her skills in re-producing that knowledge are plentiful. A great speaker and a knowledgeable advisor.

detailed understanding of the issues that faced a start up company

nic slocum

The website Ann created for us has been the single most important marketing tool we have used these past 14 years of operation. Better than social media and brochures combined I would say! It’s stunning position when whale watching is searched for has been a significant part of that success and, without a doubt, our position on search engines was achieved quickly and efficiently as a result of Ann’s detailed understanding of the issues that faced a start up company wanting to achieve a meaningful and valuable internet presence. Easy to work with, proficient and detailed.

someone who knows what they are talking about

Tony Cantwell, The Baby Greeting Company

Can’t recommend Ann Donnelly highly enough. There are people who talk about web solutions and it is evident they don’t have much hands on experience; but Ann has been trying, testing and expanding her work experience for many years and it is refreshing and reassuring to work with someone who knows what they are talking about.

She is a great web designer, who takes time to listen to what you want and to understand your business. She applies this knowledge then to her work and end product. She is creative and inventive and has offered plenty of suggestions to improve our website in terms of efficiency and customer service. Ann is trustworthy and reliable and I would have no hesitation is recommending her for any web project.

no jargon attitude

Ann is a very easy person to talk to; and she talks to you with a no jargon attitude which is of great help to someone who doesn’t know that much about web sites. She is a well versed person in her line of work and guides you through everything. She is a very trustworthy person and can be relied on to give you her honest opinion.
